Recovery project Esperanza, in India
Esperanza is a plastic waste management company located in Punjab, India. Esperanza is India’s only recycling company that provides end-to-end plastic waste management services across the plastic value chain. They offer consistent high-quality recycled resin to manufacturers and converters and are actively closing the loop of plastic use.
Only 20% of the collected waste in India is sorted and processed. The remaining 80% is dumped as mixed waste into the 1,684 landfills that India currently has. Landfills are the cheapest, short-term option for managing solid waste. On average, most urban local bodies spend Rs. 500-1,500 (6.30-19 USD) per ton of waste on ‘tipping fees’ for collecting, transporting, treating, and disposing of waste in dump sites.
Esperanza operates with a cyclic approach to recycling, reducing the amount of plastic ending up in landfills. Their 7-step process is based on “Plaschemy,” a process by which they mechanically recycle all kinds of plastic waste. They convert even the hard-to-recycle materials into new, usable, and safe products that reduce the dependence on virgin plastics.
With this approach of circulating all plastics in the supply chain and closing the loop of recycled materials, they create a ‘Circular’ process for the benefit of the people and the planet. The project also works closely with waste pickers for ethical sourcing of plastic scrap, educating them on material handling & segregation knowledge, giving them fair income opportunities, and medical care, and helping them improve their livelihoods in India.
“The major challenge in the industry is the lack of knowledge on hazards of single-use plastic waste, the importance of segregation & recycling and life of frontline workers… A huge awareness campaign is needed at micro & macro levels to touch upon these issues and we believe educating school children is the first step in the process as they are the building blocks of our society. Therefore, whatever revenue will be generated will be utilized in awareness & educative activities, medical camps, material handling & segregation workshops.
We plan to add more collection centers in Northern India for maximum recovery of plastic waste, which will generate more income opportunities for waste pickers and women employed in these facilities.”

Recovery project Second Life, in Thailand and Indonesia
One more recently added project is Second life, actively working on islands around Thailand and Indonesia. Second Life is a social enterprise engaged primarily in ocean plastic recovery and recycling through informal collectors. Since its start in 2020, they’ve collected and recycled over 2 million kilos of plastic, prioritizing vulnerable communities or biodiversity hotspots. This recovery is on behalf of brands like Caudalie, MARS, Clarins and others who want to offset their plastic footprint via plastic credits.
Despite Thailand’s high municipal solid waste collection and recycling rate of 88.8%, the remaining uncollected plastic waste and many unsanitary disposal facilities result in an estimated 428 000 tonnes of mismanaged plastic waste per year. Most plastic waste is generated in rural areas which is then washed-off into rivers and the marine environment.
Collecting plastic from islands and beaches is a labor-intensive process, with high costs associated with delivering ocean plastic back to the mainland to be recycled. This results in the cost of collecting plastic being higher than the selling price. To account for extra costs, Second Life is effectively raising the market price for ocean plastic. Making it possible for waste pickers to make a solid living.
Second life works together with other organizations in a network that creates a better life for locals, a better environment, and a better future. Plastiks connected with Second life in June 2022 and are very thrilled to be connecting them to the rest of the world, helping them pursue their goal of collecting and recycling 50,000,000 kgs per year from the beaches and island communities around Thailand and Indonesia.
