Plastiks Partners with Coliba to Transform Plastic Recycling in West Africa
Plastiks has entered into a partnership with Coliba, a leading social enterprise in Côte d'Ivoire funded by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, to enhance plastic recycling efforts in West Africa. This collaboration focuses on increasing transparency, accountability, and sustainability in plastic waste management.
By integrating blockchain technology into Coliba’s established recycling operations, this partnership aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of plastic waste collection and verification. This initiative not only incorporates technological advancements but also emphasizes the importance of supporting local communities and fostering economic development.
Merging Innovation with Measurable Impact
The partnership seeks to establish a more transparent and reliable plastic recycling system in West Africa. The implementation of blockchain will enable precise tracking and verification of various types of recycled plastics, including PET, HDPE, LDPE, and PP. This approach aims to eliminate greenwashing and ensure that every stage of the recycling process is fully accountable, thereby enhancing trust in sustainability initiatives.
As André Vanyi-Robin, Founder and CEO of Plastiks, states:
"Ensuring transparency in plastic waste collection and recycling is essential to promoting sustainability. By leveraging blockchain technology, we can guarantee accuracy, trust, and the elimination of greenwashing, fostering the implementation of a true circular economy."
This solution will provide stakeholders with real-time data on plastic waste recycling, facilitating greater accountability and transparency throughout the recycling process.
Empowering Communities and Driving Economic Development
In addition to its environmental benefits, this partnership has significant social and economic implications. Coliba’s network supports over 6,200 informal waste collectors, of which 85% are women. By creating green jobs, this initiative directly contributes to economic development and empowers local communities.
In 2023, Coliba generated $420,000 in additional income for waste collectors. The partnership aims to increase this figure to $1 million by 2026 while maintaining the recycling of approximately 1.5 million kilograms of plastic annually. These efforts not only enhance economic conditions but also promote gender equity and social inclusion.
A New Chapter for Sustainability in West Africa
The collaboration between Plastiks and Coliba marks a significant step in addressing plastic pollution in Côte d'Ivoire and the broader West African region. By combining blockchain-driven transparency with community-focused recycling efforts, this partnership sets a new standard for verified, socially responsible, and sustainable plastic waste management.
Together, Plastiks and Coliba, supported by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, are committed to creating a future where plastic recycling is both transparent and equitable, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable West Africa.
